Sunday Supper: 07/12/20

A regular entree for years on the "Sunday Supper" has been songs of "Compassion and Commitment." Recently songwriters have been moved to address our intense times with powerful original tunes. I'll play a couple of new ones, by The Winterlings and Grace Pettis, this week and also introduce you to Bettye LaVette's visceral cover of  Billie Holiday's signature "Strange Fruit" from her forthcoming album, Blackbirds.

We'll also toast Woody Guthrie's 108th birth anniversary on Tuesday with a tasty version of "Pastures of Plenty" by Mike Glick and an exquiste tribute to Woody and his wife Marjorie by Sharon Goldman. Tuesday is the next virtual "On Your Radar," which I'll preview with songs by Tragedy Ann, Mark Dvorak, and Siobhan O'Brien.

Also listen for Phoebe Snow, Madeleine Peyroux, and new Indigo Girls. There's plenty to satisfy your musical cravings between 5-6 p.m. EDT at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org or available anytime in the WFUV Weekend Archives, on the WFUV app or the well-balanced smart speaker of your choice.
