Sunday Supper: 05/30/21
A week after Bob Dylan's 80th birthday, this week the "Sunday Supper" features an FUV fave half his age, as Brandi Carlile hits the not-so-big 4-0! We honor her resilience and musical range, including a Joni Mitchell cover and a selection with The Highwomen. Brandi's open heart encompasses humanitarian causes and other artists she admires. One of those is Allison Russell, a member of Birds of Chicago and Our Native Daughters whose solo album, Outside Child, has earned critical raves. I'll play a track as this month's Spotlight CD.
Tensions in the Mideast remind me of Elton John's "Border Song" ("let us live in peace"), which inspired a medley of other peaceful songs by Peggy Seeger, Ron Israel, Eliza Gilkyson, and, of course, John Lennon. I'll have also a track from Amy Speace's deep new album, There Used to Be Horses Here, and in honor of the unofficial start of summer on Memorial Day Weekend, the premiere of beautiful new song by Christine Lavin, "The Best Summer."
Enjoy the best music for summer and all seasons from 5-6 p.m. ET at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org or anytime in the WFUV Weekend Archives, on the WFUV app or the seasonal smart speaker of your choice.
