Sunday Supper: 06/06/21

As Americans have borne witness to the 100th anniversary of the Tulsa massacre, this week's "Sunday Supper" offers a powerful song by the NYC bluesman Guy Davis, "God's Gonna Make Things Over," that recounts the story of that tragedy. Paula Cole in turn provides a companion piece, "God's Gonna Cut You Down," a traditional song included on her deep new release, American Quilt. Like its title, the album is a patchwork of American genres - folk, blues, popular standards - and so good that I also played Paula's version of "You Don't Know What Love Is."

Cliff Eberhardt's homage to the late Bill Morrissey, "When We Were Kings (Bill)," inspires a track from Mark Erelli from his Morrissey tribute album and an original by Morrissey himself. I'll have new music from another master songwriter, Rodney Crowell, plus a Crowell cover by Shannon McNally, and recent releases by Maria Muldaur, Carsie Blanton, Reggie Harris, and John Pizzarelli. And if songwriting genius is your thing, a Bob Dylan classic for good measure.

We worship at the altar of the songwriting gods from 5-6 p.m. ET at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org or anytime in the WFUV Weekend Archives, on the WFUV app or the pitch perfect smart speaker of your choice.
