Sunday Supper: 01/24/21
On Wednesday President Biden offered healing words to a sharply divided nation. In 1865 Abraham Lincoln gave an Inaugural Address to an even more divided nation, urging "With malice toward none...let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds." In 1938, on the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, FDR gave an address as Civil War veterans from both sides in their 90's came together. Inspired by that event, Tony Trischka has released a concept album, Shall We Hope, which seems particularly timely. In that spirit of reconciliation I'll play a couple tracks from it on this week's "Sunday Supper."
There will also be songs about getting together by Gathering Time and Bruce Sudano, about controversial monuments by Tret Fure and Jordi Baizan, and peace by Eliza Gilkyson and The Subdudes. I'll also have a mini review of One Night in Miami, featuring Leslie Odom, Jr., as Sam Cooke, new music by Barry Gibb and Gillian Welch, and a birthday shout-out to Bettye LaVette.
It all comes together between 5-6 p.m. EST at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org, or on demand in the WFUV Weekend Archives, on the WFUV app or the non-partisan smart speaker of your choice.
