Sunday Supper: 03/07/21
Andra Day just copped a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Musical or Comedy. While The United States vs. Billie Holiday takes some liberties with the true story (as biopics often do), she gives a fearless performance as the legendary singer. You can hear her rendition of "Strange Fruit," the controversial song which sparked the government interventionn, on today's "Sunday Supper."
I'll also share several discoveries from the virtual Folk Alliance conference (dubbed "Folk Unlocked"): Erin Ivey, Jaspar Lepak, and Buffalo Rose. Annette Wasilik, who performed at "Folk Unlocked," will be part this Tuesday's "On Your Radar," along with Boston veterans Danielle Miraglia and Kemp Harris, which I'll preview. I'm delighted to premiere a track from Sloan Wainwright's new album, Red Maple Tree. And if you're looking for something familiar, you'll hear Blood, Sweat & Tears, Bruce Springsteen, A.J. Croce, and Freedy Johnston.
Music to open your ears and your mind today at 5 p.m. EST at 90.7 FM and wfuv.org, plus anytime in the Weekend Archives, on the WFUV app, or the enlightened smart speaker of your choice.
